The recently listed information technology company TechComm has won a contract for portable barcode and radio-frequency computer equipment for the Defence Department.
The deal is believed to be worth between $3 million and $5 million, but could lead to further contracts worth double that amount over three years.
The contract is part of Defence's supply systems redevelopment project, worth more than $130 million.
TechComm is providing radio terminals, forklift-truck terminals, workstation barcode scanners and printers to be used for warehouse receipts, transfers, issues, put-away, picking operations and stocktaking.
The system enables storemen to update inventories from their forklifts through radio communication, ensuring accurate information with easier and cheaper installation and maintenance.
Mr Patrick Gallagher, an executive director of TechComm, said: ``The Department of Defence is showing the way to Australian business.
Their fully integrated system will allow huge cost savings."
